Ready to leave USA?

We see it on the news, social media, and it comes up in conversations pretty regularly nowadays. The topic of Americans leaving the US and moving abroad is not just for a “Gap Year” or a single person in their 20’s but parents taking their school aged children out of the country to move abroad and retirees looking to get out of the US.

Healthcare in the US is Broken

In the US, you will often hear horror stories about someone having an accident and getting stuck with some extraordinary bill or a person refusing an ambulance ride because of the fear of the bill after said medical treatment. Needless to say, this is NOT good that people are scared to get sick for fear of either not being able to afford treatment or going broke trying. Furthermore, and the sad truth is that healthcare in the U.S. is mediocre, costs too much, and is too reliant on businesses making money to really be able to care for the people it’s supposed to serve.

We all want for ourselves, our family and friends, is a healthcare system that can put patients' health care needs first and where the patient can focus on their health and not a bill that will dictate their care.

Safety

The increase in mass shootings across the US is at an all time high. Earlier this week, the US had an assassination attempt on former President Trump. It’s sad and disheartening that shootings are nearly a daily occurrence where we hear about a tragic incident that has forever changed a family and a community. It is just too frequent that it's hard to shake the feeling that it can happen anywhere and anytime. What has been even more disheartening is the response to this within the US. Instead of being proactive and strengthening gun restrictions, the US has become reactive with creating “active shooter drills” over true gun reform that would increase safety.

Americans can only dream of a work and life balance

Costs are rising, medical care is out of control, college is costing parents hundreds of thousands of dollars with a mix of leaving newly graduated students in debt of hundreds and thousands of dollars. In order to live and meet daily expectations, a job and a side hustle is needed!

I can’t think of a single person from 18 and older in the US that doesn’t talk about a side hustle. This goes for my younger siblings including a newly graduated high school student to my parents that are “retired” and in their 70’s. A side hustle on top of your full time job, that can go way beyond the 40 hour work week, is the norm. When you add to that the US work culture around not using earned vacation days, having to actively work at doing self care activities and only taking time off when your kid is sick leads to an unhealthy community. We are teaching our younger generations bad habits and this way of living is not sustainable. At the end of meeting these life demands, if you can meet them, your working time is all the time.

Student debt is obstructing growth, affecting quality of life, and stifling economic development.

Education costs continue to rise and many families cannot afford college without taking out student loans. For some, even federal student loans that have payment plan options and potential loan forgiveness attached to the loan, aren't always covering the full costs of school so parents are having to make decisions around private student loans as well. Students and parents can be carrying these loans for 20+ years and it's not uncommon to hear from people horror stories that their loan balances continue to be as high as when they left school, due to interest rates on the loans.

Like all parents, Americans want to give their children the best opportunities to create a quality life and to pursue their dreams, but if they choose higher education (which is heavily pushed in American culture) when they graduate, these school loans can be debilitating.

Politics in the US is exhausting and infuriating.

I wasn’t going to touch politics. That’s how tired many Americans are on the topic… However, with the upcoming election in November 2024, it really can’t be avoided. Regardless of which party you vote for, it’s safe to say that the US has never had a greater divide and no one is happy. The divisiveness and hatred between people only seems to get bigger and all issues of racism, education, women’s rights, gun safety, all lead back to politics and are tied to money.

I have heard from many Americans, sentiments of worry about where the country is headed and statements that start with, “If so and so get’s elected, I am moving to…” Fill in the blanks of the who and the where, but it is always out of the country and basically the need for an exit strategy. While AskRudy cannot make the decision for you, we can say unequivocally that we are so happy we made the decision to leave in 2023 and as you navigate making a decision for what is best for you and your family, AskRudy will be there to help decide what to do and how to do it, if you choose to move abroad. AskRudy can help you to navigate how to make the move and adjust to your new country.
